However, this had not been consistent for some restrictive practices, such as the use of bed rails and reclining chairs. This was a breach of regulation 11 of the Health and Social Care Act Regulations 2014. The home was well managed and both staff and relatives said the home was friendly and caring.

One relative said, "I think the openness in the home comes from the manager. If we ask a question we always feel they are telling us the truth." Feedback and questionnaires had been completed and we saw evidence that staff and relative meetings were taking place. Family members told us the home involved them in decisions and kept up to date about their relatives care. However, one person said they would like more updates about the care their relative received. Care files for people who used the service had detailed care planning and risk assessments in place, which provided up to date information about how to support their individual needs, choices and likes.
Services we don’t give a rating
Both ownership and rental options are commonly available, as well as alternative ways of paying for the services on offer – including part deferring payment until a property is sold. Buying a ‘home for life plan’, or ‘lifetime lease’, gives you the right to live in a property until you die or move to a care home. This might enable you to live somewhere you couldn’t otherwise afford. The Care Quality Commission has monitored the nursing home since May 2016. In the last report by the CQC from May 2018, the nursing home received an overall rating of good. Evidence was available to demonstrate that supervision sessions were conducted for staff, as well as annual appraisals, which enabled them to discuss their work performance and training needs with their line managers.

As with hotels, the cost of living in a care home varies widely according to its location, the size of your room or suite, and the facilities on offer. There is often a substantial difference between fees charged to those who can afford the costs themselves and those who receive help from their Local Authority. A majority of homes aim to cater for both, but some target only one or the other. With a few exceptions, accommodation in a care home cannot be bought or rented like retirement housing.

Care homes are regulated by independent Inspectorates in each country of the UK, subject to periodic inspections and awarded quality grades. We found the plans of care to be, in the main, person centred, providing staff with clear guidance about people’s needs and how these were to be best met. However, on occasions some conflicting information was provided in the records we saw. We saw that in some cases relatives had given consent on behalf of those who lived at the home, but there was not always documented evidence available to demonstrate they had the legal authority to do so. For services we haven't rated we use ticks and crosses to show whether we've asked them to take further action or taken enforcement action against them. – the service isn't performing as well as it should and we have told the service how it must improve.
Deciding whether to move home in older age can be challenging. A move may provide a whole new lease of life, but a wrong choice can be difficult to undo. Assistive technology was utilised in a variety of ways in the home to monitor the quality of the service and support people’s needs and choices. Staff had been recruited safely and received induction training and other training relevant to their roles. Staff told us they felt confident they understood people's needs and how to care for them. Relatives we spoke with were confident their relations were safe. People were supported to eat their meals in a timely manner.
